Summary
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to contribute to cancer survival rates through improving early diagnosis.
Aim
To understand contemporary lay referral for potentially cancerous symptoms and to learn whether it can encourage earlier diagnosis of cancer.
Research questions
- What is known about contemporary lay referrals for potentially cancerous symptoms?
- What is the incidence in Wales of lay referral for potentially cancerous symptoms?
- What proportion of lay referrals for potentially cancerous symptoms are acted upon?
- Can lay referrals influence the interval between the date of first being aware of a potentially cancerous symptoms symptom, and the date of the first presentation of that symptom to a GP?

An important element of the PhD study is patient and public involvement to strengthen and relate it to the needs and concerns of patients. PPI will contribute to both phases of the study as well as development and dissemination.
